Lead And They Will Follow

I must say I laughed out loud when I read the recent JavaWorld article entitled "BEA seeks to modularize app server".

My first reaction was...Gary, Gary, Gary...if you are going to follow the leaders, then please use the proper terminology! It's not a backplane, it's a Microkernel! Don't let the marketing people who came up with "Liquid" bully you into using "Backplane".

If you need help getting your marketing team to embrace "Microkernel", feel free to point them to the quote from Gartner in our October SOA announcement.
"Increasingly, platform vendors are using a ‘microkernel’ style of architecture, where the platform consists of the kernel and numerous plug-in functional components," said Yefim Natis, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner.

From the beginning, JBoss has been built from the ground up on a Microkernel architecture. Why? Because it provides a modular, lightweight foundation that platform services can plug into and benefit from a common set of capabilities such as lifecycle and dependency management, hot deployment, and JMX management.

Over the past 9 months or so, we have been hard at work improving our Microkernel even more. Why? Because we are laser-focused on simplifying enterprise Java for developers. We have the market-leading EJB3 implementationthat brings DRAMATIC simplification to EJB applications. Moreover, Gavin King, founder of Hibernate, has created JBoss Seamto expand further on the improvements made in Java EE 5 by unifying the component models across JSF, EJB3, and process-driven applications that use JBoss jBPM. Check out the ONJava article about JBoss Seam to learn more.

Customers deserve a flexible platform that is both powerful and simple, and that is our focus at JBoss. While I am happy to see that BEA has FINALLY seen the light on the importance of a Microkernel architecture, the fact still remains that they have a complex and monolithic architecture. I wish them luck as they teach their Elephant to dance.

Ciao for now,
Shaun
