Neil Bartlett: Silly Season at SUNW

It must be silly season: the big tech news of the week is Sun Microsystems changing their stock symbol from SUNW to JAVA. FSJ has the best put down, but there’s a more serious point to make: “Java” is now one of the most overloaded terms in IT. It is second only to Microsoft’s .NET, which at one time meant everything from the CLR to Passport to MSN Messenger.

When people outside Sun talk about Java, there are a few things we might be talking about. One is the Java language. Another, more importantly, is the Java platform, i.e. the JVM and its libraries. But most important of all, we mean the Java community… that vast ecosystem of vendors, users, developers, consultants, researchers and educators, without whom Java would have had the same impact on the world as Modula-3.

It’s very unlikely that when we say Java we mean Sun Microsystems Inc., yet Sun is now trying to equate itself with all of the above things. It hasn’t earned that right. Technically speaking, Sun owns the Java trademark and it can do whatever it like with the brand, but Java is more than just a brand, and the Java community has always been far bigger than Sun. Whereas Sun has generally been a fair steward of the community, it does not own and certainly does not equal that community.

IBM had the guts to set Eclipse free, as a brand owned by its community, rather than any single member; subsequently it flourished, and at no detriment to its former master. Sun could do the same with Java, but instead it chooses to proclaim “we own this!”. I can’t help wondering if it’s time for the Java community to re-form around a name that is not controlled by a single company.
